Census 2020 - Providers encouraged to reassure patients/families to participate

Posted on September 04, 2020

The Census will close in less than a month.

Maine's self-response rate is at 57.3% - but because Maine was among just three states that started the door-to-door enumeration process early, on July 16, Maine now has an overall response rate of 93.2% including both self-response and answering census enumerators’ questions. Still this leaves out too many people. An undercount will be especially detrimental to children.

The federal government decided in the beginning of the pandemic to continue counting through October 31, but recently revised that timeline and decided to call the count complete as of September 30. So, if you have patients that haven’t yet responded, please encourage them to do so right away online at Census.gov https://2020census.gov/en/ways-to-respond/responding-online.html#:~:text=How%20do%20I%20respond%3F,the%20Census%20ID%20login%20field.

Newborn babies and young children under five are often missed in the census. The 2020 Census helps determine which areas qualify for the critical resources that children and families depend on for the next 10 years—basically, an entire childhood! Examples of resources that could be impacted include food assistance, Head Start, childcare, housing support, public schools, early intervention services for children with special needs, children’s health insurance, and more.

Please encourage your patients to complete the census and assure them the data is only used for this purpose, is protected, and cannot be used against them. Census workers are bound by law, with penalty of jail, to protect this information. Please share this as many families are not aware of this fact.

An accurate count helps us grow stronger over the next ten years. Responses to the 2020 Census will inform funding for clinics, Medicare, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and other health care assistance programs. Visit 2020Census.gov for more information.
