The Maine Association of Psychiatric Physicians is proud to announce that the esteemed Bessel van der Kolk MD, trauma expert, co-founder of the Trauma Research Foundation (TRF), and best-selling author of The Body Keeps the Score is returning to Maine! He has spent his career studying how children and adults adapt to traumatic experiences, and has translated emerging findings from neuroscience and attachment research to develop and study a range of treatments for traumatic stress in children and adults. The focus of the symposium will be on a comprehensive understanding of the neuroscience and impact of psychological trauma and advances in treatment including treatment with psychedelics. Dr. van der Kolk will talk about how exposure to multiple traumas, particularly in childhood, has been proposed to result in a complex of symptoms that includes posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
