Second Varicella Dose Required for Kindergarten Entry

Posted on September 30, 2021

The Immunization Requirements for Maine Schools have changed. Among the changes is the addition of a second varicella dose for kindergarten entry. This was not written as a gradual implementation, so practices likely have patients who do not meet the requirements and need to be called in to get this additional dose.

Public Law 2019, Ch. 154, An Act To Protect Maine Children and Students from Preventable Diseases by Repealing Certain Exemptions from the Laws Governing Immunization Requirements, went into effect on September 1, 2021. The amended joint rule of Maine Department of Health and Human Services and Maine Department of Education, Immunization Requirements for School Children, will take effect September 25, 2021.

Our colleagues at DOE and DHHS have created a Frequently Asked Questions document to assist school in implementing the new rules that are required by the passing of the law in 2019. Additional questions not covered by the FAQ may be submitted to DOE nurse consultant Emily Poland at Emily.poland@maine.gov. The FAQ document will be updated periodically, as needed.
