NRP Training

  • Rosamund Davis, MD MaineGeneral Medical Center

    Rosie Davis is a Pediatric Hospitalist at MaineGeneral Medical Center and occasionally does per diem shifts at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Rosie is the Maine AAP Disaster Preparedness Ambassador and helped create a website to educate Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinators and expand the Always Ready for Children program in collaboration with EMS for Children. She is also working with MaineHealth and their SIM Center on the RMOMS grant which includes research, communication with Maternal Health/OB colleagues, sharing resources with emergency departments, and continued development of the emergency protocols, policies, simulation exercises and website resources.

  • Dawn Tassi, RN Penobscot Bay Medical Center

    Dawn Tassi RN, BSN, is an experienced OB nurse of 33 years. She has been an NRP instructor since 2011, when the practice of simulation and debriefing was introduced to the program. Since that time, creating classes that feel both approachable and applicable to all learners has been a passion.

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is an evidence-based training program by the AAP and American Heart Association that teaches healthcare professionals standardized steps to assess and resuscitate newborns at birth, focusing on rapid, team-based actions like drying, stimulating, clearing airways, and using ventilation to manage breathing and heart rate for distressed infants. It's the gold standard for neonatal care, ensuring providers can act efficiently and effectively during unexpected events.

  • Brian Youth, MD Maine AAP President

    Brian Youth is a primary care pediatrician in the Greater Portland region and is the current President of the Maine Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. In addition to caring for patients with the MaineHealth Medical Group (MHMG) at Westbrook Pediatrics, he also teaches and runs a new autism concern clinic at the ambulatory pediatric resident teaching clinic at Maine Medical Center. Dr.Youth is the MHMG and BBCH Children’s Health Service Line Senior Medical Director for Pediatric Primary Care- Southern Region, and works as an EPIC informaticist for Maine Health. He also serves on the School Health Committee of the Maine AAP, the Environmental Health and Climate Change Committee, and is a member of the Council on School Health with the National American Academy of Pediatrics.

PrEP for the PCP: Improving Education Among Medical Residents

  • Jonathan Oswald, MD MaineHealth

    Dr. Jonathan Oswald is currently a third-year resident within the Maine Medical Center Internal Medicine-Pediatrics program. He is originally from Indiana and completed his undergraduate degree in biology at Indiana University before completing medical school at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Oswald’s clinical interests focus on primary care for underserved populations, LGBTQ+ healthcare, and medical education.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Outline current disparities in national PrEP prescribing.
  2. Review PrEP indications, formulations, and drug monitoring.
  3. Discuss how current quality improvement initiatives have increased PrEP education among Maine Medical Center Pediatrics and Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residents.

Picky or Restrictive? Identification and Early Management of Adolescent Eating Disorders

  • Cynthia Robbins MD, MS, FAAP Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, Tufts School of Medicine and Adolescent Medicine, MaineHealth, South Portland Adolescent and Young Adult Clinic

    Cynthia Robbins is an adolescent medicine physician at Maine Health and practices in the South Portland Adolescent and Young Adult clinic. She attended Grinnell College for her undergraduate degree, Case Western Reserve University for medical school and completed a pediatrics residency at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio and an adolescent medicine fellowship at Indiana University in Indianapolis. Prior to moving to Maine in 2023, she was an associate clinical professor of pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine for 12 years and there was active in pediatric resident education, the Indiana Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and advocacy for adolescent reproductive health. She now is an associate professor of pediatrics at Tufts and serves as a board member of the Eating Disorder Association of Maine, and is a member of the AAP, Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine, and the North American Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. She is the program lead for the eating disorder program at South Portland AYA clinic and sees patients there for eating disorders. She also practices in the gender clinic and at South Portland sees young people ages 10-26 for primary care, contraception and reproductive health concerns, acne, and really any adolescent health concern.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize concerning symptoms of an eating disorder in a more and more "Diet Culture" landscape.
  2. Be able to identify and manage eating disorders through coordination with multidisciplinary providers in your area.
  3. Partner with parents for home interventions to treat eating concerns and eating disorders.

The importance of Infant Nutrition for Early Child Neurodevelopment

  • Sean Deoni, PhD Director of MRI Research, Department of Pediatrics. Memorial Hospital of RI & Adjunct Professor of Engineering, Brown University

    Dr. Deoni received his PhD in medical biophysics from the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada, and postdoctoral research fellowships at the Centre for Neuroimaging Sciences, Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, and Oxford University UK.

    Dr. Deoni is an associate professor of pediatrics (research) and associate professor of diagnostic imaging (research) at Brown University. As a physicist by training, his research interests focus on understanding the biological basis of the MRI signal and developing novel techniques to investigate brain tissue and microstructure. As a neuroscientist, I have strived to use those techniques to characterize healthy and atypical child neurodevelopment and decipher the complex environmental interactions that shape patterns of growth and outcome.

    And as a parent, I’ve sought to use that information to help children become their most confident, curious, and healthy self no matter where they live, play, and grow.

    Dr. Deoni has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed journal articles. He is the director of the Advanced Baby Imaging lab at Brown University, one of the largest pediatric imaging and neurodevelopment labs in the world. From 2018 to 2022, he was the senior program officer for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health: Discovery and Tools section.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To understand the processes of early child neurodevelopment that underly developing cognitive functions.
  2. To understand the role of specific nutrients these fundamental neurodevelopmental processes.
  3. To understand additional environmental factors that alongside nutrition can improve neurodevelopment.

Shining Light on Inequities in Pediatric Care

  • Chris McGlaughlin, MSW, LCSW Inspired Consulting Group

    Chris McLaughlin, MSW, LCSW (he/him/his) is the owner and lead consultant of Inspired Consulting Group, LLC and the co-host of the Inspired Insights Podcast. A lifelong resident of Maine, he obtained both his BA in Psychology (1996) and his MSW (2001) from the University of Maine and is progressing towards his DSW from the University of New England. Chris has spent more than 25+ years as a provider and a leader in behavioral health services for youth and families across a variety of clinical settings, including treatment foster care, residential treatment facilities, public schools, private practice, community-based programs, and psychiatric hospital-based services. He is the proud former executive director of the NASW Maine Chapter where he led legislative and professional development efforts for the Chapter. Chris has a passion for advocacy, macro social work practice, and teaching, and is an adjunct faculty member at the schools of social work for the University of Maine, the University of Maine at Presque Isle, and the University of Southern Maine, and works adjunct for the University of New England and Husson University as well. Chris and his husband live in Hermon, Maine with their three dogs, Anna, Becky, and Sawyer, and are avid fans of many types of recreation and leisure during all of Maine’s seasons.

  • Anne Coates, MD MaineHealth Pediatric Pulmonology

    Dr Annie Coates is a pediatric pulmonologist in Portland, Maine. She loves teaching the next generation training in pediatric medicine at Barbara Bush Children's Hospital. Dr. Coates graduated from Princeton University in 2001 and from the University of Vermont Larner School of Medicine in 2007. She completed her pediatrics residency at the University of Massachusetts in 2010 and fellowship in pediatric pulmonology at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford in 2013. Her clinical interests are in Aerodigestive disorders, asthma, BPD, medical education and advocacy. She is thrilled to be the incoming president of the Maine Chapter of the AAP! She is also the mother of four children who are her pride and joy.

  • Meredith Jackson, MD MaineHealth, BBCH

    As a pediatric hospitalist, Dr. Jackson shares she feels privileged to care for patients in the hospital setting from the moment they are born through young adulthood. She feels it is an honor to be part of a team that provides specialized inpatient pediatric care to the children of Maine and surrounding areas. Through open communication, she strives to practice family-centered care, meeting the goals of both the patient and their caregivers. Dr. Jackson did her residency at MMC and attended UVM Medical School.

  • Steve DiGiovanni, MD MaineHealth

    Dr. Stephen DiGiovanni graduated from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in 1996. He completed his pediatric residency and a pediatric chief year at Maine Medical Center from 1997 to 2001. Dr. DiGiovanni then provided primary pediatric care at Bayview Pediatrics in Yarmouth Maine for 9 years. In 2011, Dr. DiGiovanni returned to Maine Medical Center to teach and provide care at the MMC Pediatric Clinic Residency Clinic.

    Since 2013, Dr. DiGiovanni has been the Medical Director for the Maine Medical Center Outpatient Clinics. The Clinics serve a diverse population while providing an excellent platform for primary care medical education for residents and medical students. Dr. DiGiovanni is also the Medical Lead for the MaineHealth Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Resiliency Program. The objectives of the program are to prevent, identify and treat Adverse Childhood Experiences.

Learning objectives:

  1. Identify key health disparities affecting pediatric populations and describe how structural and systemic inequities influence access to care, quality of services, and health outcomes for children and adolescents.
  2. Apply concepts related to healht equity to cilincal practice by analyzing pediatric case examples that highlight disparities in assessment, treatment planning, family engagement, and care coordination.

Tiny Teeth, Big Impact: Fluoride Facts for Pediatricians

  • Susan Harvey, DMD

    Dr. Harvey was born in Portsmouth, NH to a family of dentists. She received her undergraduate education at Barnard College at Columbia University. Dr. Harvey continued her education at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine where she began her journey into the dental profession. After graduation, she worked in private practice with her father and brother in Portsmouth, NH. In 2023, she moved to Maine and shifted her focus from Private Practice to Public Health Dentistry. She now works as a school based Dentist in local Bangor area schools and teaches at University of Maine of Augusta at Bangor in the Dental Hygiene program. She has a passion for treating populations that have been typically ostracized from receiving dental care and hopes that together we can improve dental care access in Maine.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Educate learners on the benefits of fluoride.
  2. Educate learners on how to use fluoride in their practices.

Food Allergy and Immunotherapy

  • Ring-Chi Li, DO Northern Light Health

    Dr. Li earned a Master’s degree in Toxicology from National Taiwan University and a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Cambridge in the U.K. He later pursued postdoctoral training in Neuroinflammation at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Subsequently, he completed my medical degree at Touro University California, followed by a residency at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati and an Allergy and Immunology Fellowship at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

    Before fellowship training, he practiced hospital medicine with the Mid-Atlantic Kaiser Permanente Group in Baltimore for two years. In November 2020, he joined Northern Light Health in Bangor, where he currently practice as an allergist and immunologist.

    Throughout his career, he has been actively involved in research and leads two clinical trials: one with Pfizer on the efficacy and immunogenicity of a Lyme disease vaccine and another funded by the Department of Defense in collaboration with JaxLab, investigating glucose metabolism in lupus development and treatment. They are preparing to serve as a clinical trial site for evaluating the peanut patch as epicutaneous immunotherapy for peanut allergy.

    In addition to clinical and research work, he is honored to serve as the president of the Maine Allergy Society and the treasurer of the New England Society of Allergy since 2022. These roles allow him to collaborate with colleagues and contribute to advancing the field of allergy and immunology.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Diagnose food allergy correctly (prevent over and under diagnosis).
  2. Idenitfy food triggers, educate on avoidance, and signs and symptoms of allergic eaction and appropraite treatment.
  3. Discuss available management options including immunotherapy.

Orthostatic Intolerance in Adolescents: A Practical Approach to Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)

    Priyanka Shekhawat, MD, FAAP is a pediatric neurologist at Mass General Brigham Wentworth-Douglass Hospital (MGB/WDH) in Dover, NH, where she provides comprehensive neurologic care for children with developmental, behavioral, and neurologic conditions. Her clinical work spans the breadth of pediatric neurology, with strength in clinical neurophysiology, headache, and autonomic disorders. At WDH, she serves as an attending neurologist in the Autonomic Laboratory and directs the Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome Rehabilitation Program, contributing to the MGB Program in Small Fiber and Autonomic Neurology. Dr. Shekhawat has received recognition for scholarly work, medical education initiatives, community health engagement, and mentorship across training levels. Dr. Shekhawat has been strongly committed to advancing pediatric neurology within the American Academy of Pediatrics. She remains active in national pediatric and neurology organizations advocating for improved autonomic care, telehealth integration, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Accurately diagnose POTS
  2. Understand how to screen POTS patients for common comorbidities.
  3. Implement common non-pharmacological/pharmacological treatment approaches.
