Autism Spectrum Disorders: Challenges, Strengths, and Strategies in the Educational Setting
-
Victoria Dalzell, MD, FAAP
MaineHealth
Being a developmental and behavioral pediatrician was the perfect match for me, as it combined what I had studied in college, psychology, with medicine. Prior to medical school I worked in both a residential treatment center for children and a children’s psychiatric hospital. I learned how children’s difficult behavior could easily be misunderstood and wanted to help reframe how their behavior was viewed. My clinical interests include autism spectrum disorders, complex ADHD, learning difficulties, intellectual disabilities and anxiety. I enjoy assisting families through diagnosis, navigation of treatment and services and eventually preparing them for the transition to adulthood. After being in practice for over twenty years, teaching has remained a strong passion and my goal is to spread that teaching not only to the residents in our program but also to primary care providers and clinicians who care for children across the state.
-
Tracy Libby, LCSW
MaineHealth
I worked as a school social worker for over 20 years before joining MaineHealth’s Pediatric Specialty and Genetics team. I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work and bring a strong passion for supporting children and families. In my current role, I provide short-term, goal-focused counseling and offer case management services to help families connect with valuable community resources—it’s truly a win-win!
Outside of work, I love spending time with my two boys and our two dogs. Fitness and being outdoors are a big part of my life, and I enjoy finding new ways to stay active and connected to nature.
Learning Objectives:
- The learner will be able to understand how different severity levels of autism spectrum disorders may present.
- The learner will be able identify possible challenges in the educational setting.
- The learner will be able to name a few strategies to use for students with autism spectrum disorders.
