In 2018, the American Academy of Periodontology released a new classification system for periodontal conditions of natural and implant-borne teeth. It is now out with the old 1999 system and in with the new. Many changes were made, new categories were developed, and language was adjusted for identifying, diagnosing and treatment planning periodontal conditions. It is now up to the providers to learn about this new system and apply its diagnostic criteria in patient care.

At the conclusion of this course, the oral health care professional will be able to:
1. Incorporate the 2019 AAP system into clinical practice.
2. Define the 4 categories of the AAP Classification of Periodontal & Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions.
3. Differentiate between health, stability, and disease for natural-borne and implant-borne teeth.
4. Utilize the patient’s AAP diagnosis to build appropriate dental hygiene care plans.
