Conference Objectives:

By the end of this conference, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify lactation resources and strengthen referral pathways across the perinatal care system.
  2. Apply practical frameworks for counseling families around supplementation, perceived low milk supply, and early postpartum feeding challenges in ways that protect infant feeding goals and avoid stigma.
  3. Recognize how cis-heteronormative assumptions show up in infant and child feeding support and apply inclusive, trauma-informed strategies to provide care for trans, queer, and all family structures.
  4. Describe current evidence-based guidelines for supporting human milk feeding among patients with substance use disorder, including decision-making pathways and communication strategies across the care team.
  5. Demonstrate hands-on competency in at least four clinical lactation skills including pump use, flange fitting, latch assessment, alternative feeding techniques, and mental health and substance use screening.
  6. Identify structural, logistical, and emotional barriers breast/chestfeeding families face when returning to work and describe evidence-based strategies and legal protections that support this transition.
