The Whole Picture: Lactation Support Across the Continuum of Care

Conference Objectives:
By the end of this conference, participants will be able to:
- Identify lactation resources and strengthen referral pathways across the perinatal care system.
- Apply practical frameworks for counseling families around supplementation, perceived low milk supply, and early postpartum feeding challenges in ways that protect infant feeding goals and avoid stigma.
- Recognize how cis-heteronormative assumptions show up in infant and child feeding support and apply inclusive, trauma-informed strategies to provide care for trans, queer, and all family structures.
- Describe current evidence-based guidelines for supporting human milk feeding among patients with substance use disorder, including decision-making pathways and communication strategies across the care team.
- Demonstrate hands-on competency in at least four clinical lactation skills including pump use, flange fitting, latch assessment, alternative feeding techniques, and mental health and substance use screening.
- Identify structural, logistical, and emotional barriers breast/chestfeeding families face when returning to work and describe evidence-based strategies and legal protections that support this transition.
