Description: Grief can present in many different ways in children and adolescents, with responses often varying by age, developmental stage, relationship to the loss, and individual circumstances. This session will explore what pediatric primary care providers and their clinical teams may notice, how they can offer compassionate and practical support to young people and families experiencing loss, and when additional resources or referrals may be helpful. 

Learning Objectives:

• Describe ways grief may present differently in children and adolescents across developmental stages.
• Identify signs and behaviors that may indicate a child or adolescent is experiencing grief or having difficulty coping with loss.
• Discuss practical ways pediatric primary care providers and clinical teams can support grieving children and families and connect them with additional resources when appropriate.

Presenter: Sara Asch, MA, ET - Director of Outreach and Education Center for Grieving Children

Sara Asch is the Director of Outreach and Education at the Center for Grieving Children in Maine. During her 19 years with the Center, she has supported programs across the organization and has developed and co-facilitated trainings related to grief, loss, and supporting children and families. Through webinars, trainings, community education, and crisis response, she helps equip professionals and communities with practical approaches for supporting grieving children, teens, young adults, and families.
